ebooks.
The problem with the
ebook licenses is they try to impose additional restrictions on the reader (usually via DRM) that go way beyond those imposed
by the normal copyright law that applies to print books.
With
ebooks and
license agreements, they can essentially opt not do business with libraries (
by not allowing circulation as a permitted activity under the
license offered) or charge libraries at differential (much higher) rates, as well as manipulating availability (for example, no bestsellers in the library till a year after consumer release).
Among the many reasons Stallman gives for boycotting Amazon are that the company sells
ebooks and digital music that deprives customers of their rights through restrictive
licensing, that the Amazon Kindle - or Swindle, as he calls it - uses proprietary software and contains backdoors through which Amazon can delete books and update software, that the company reportedly abuses its employees
by making them work in sweatshops, and that it hurts independent bookstores, small publishers, and authors through its near - monopoly power.
