For Wesselmann, Nude with Lamp posed two challenges:
the eccentric shape of the canvas and the chiaroscuro of the nude in shadow.

They were
eccentric shaped canvases made out
of doors and still wall based, but breaking out
of the rectangle... Everything about Braque was the antithesis
of good painting, which was loose - limbed, open and daring.
Maychack has found his own way to this sort
of provocation, echoing Duchamp (1887 - 1968) less than 1960s makers
of the «
shaped canvas,» such as Frank Stella, whose paintings»
eccentric geometry made the arbitrariness
of pictures» rectangularity clearly felt.
After working through a series
of eccentric handmade
shaped canvases and a group
of torqued monochromes (which I exhibited in New York, at Stephanie Theodore Gallery, following a second show with Strelow), I attempted to locate areas
of surface and support that had been overlooked in painting.
