This generally involves x-rays, electrical recording of the heart (ECG) and ultrasound
examination (
echocardiography).
A valuable
examination would be an auscultation of Shelby's chest by your Veterinarian with a stethoscope, but an x-ray would also be valuable as the opacity of the lungs, size of the heart, any fluid and other anomalies would be seen easier; if a heart condition is then suspected,
echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart) would be a useful next step.
In most cases, you will be asked to leave your animal in the care of the student after this initial
examination so that we may begin appropriate diagnostic testing, which commonly includes
echocardiography, thoracic x-rays and electrocardiography.
This test permits the
examination not only of the muscle and valves, but also of the blood flow (Doppler
echocardiography).
