Environmental philosophy is a growing subdiscipline within Western philosophy, characterized by the assumption that traditional Western metaphysics and moral theory are inadequate to the solution
of environmental
problems and that in our age alternative,
ecological world views and axiologies are needed.
That people were essentially a
problem, even a pollutant, rather than a resource; that social, political, economic, and
ecological catastrophe was right around the corner, unless drastic steps were taken to stabilize and then reverse
world population trends - these were the themes, familiar to even the most casual student
of the American anti-natalist lobby, that set the agenda for Budapest and Mexico City.
Dr. Joseph Needham and Dr. W.H. Thorpe, Cambridge authorities on biochemistry and zoology; Dr. A.R. Peacocke, biologist in Cambridge; Professor L.C. Birch, Australian expert on evolutionary changes in the realm
of living matter; and Ian Barbour, American physicist, whose special interest has lately been turned toward the
ecological problem — these are but a few
of the many who have publicly avowed their acceptance
of a process way
of looking at humankind and the
world.
I would like to name two significant
problems for which neither has yet been able to find a satisfactory solution: the impoverishment
of the Third
World not only through capitalistic but also through socialistic forms
of exploitation; and, the
ecological crisis.
On the other hand, there are horrendous dangers
of worldwide misery implicit in the threat
of nuclear war, extinction by
ecological disruption, the explosion
of population, and the political
problems of governing the
world's peoples during a period
of such momentous crises.
In a
world that is full
of ecological problems it's not ethical to eat so much meat.
The answer to the
problem is not the preserve
of one discipline or scientist but will be found where several disciplines work together to tackle the biological,
ecological, environmental, geographical, agricultural, and even sociological, economic, and financial barriers to feeding the
world.
However, I have very little idea what the effects
of AGW on humanity will be beyond the fact that it is an
ecological disaster which can kill lots
of people in the developing
world (excellent reasons to do whatever it takes to get rid
of it, in my opinion) and so I have a
problem with responding to the argument that we need do nothing because at least as far as the DEVELOPED
world is concerned AGW will be at most a nuisance.
Some
of us see the
world's
ecological integrity as being in dangerously precipitous decline, and finding answers to what are clearly complex
problems is vexing, to say the least.
