Because body, mind, and spirit are an indissoluble triad in the human personality,
man deals with his physical needs in characteristically mental and spiritual ways, ordering his
economic life according to rational canons and multiplying his demands beyond all limits in obedience to the infinite yearnings
of the self - transcending spirit.
In this picture
man is no longer seen as subject to ineluctable
economic forces, but as himself responsible for deliberately organizing his
life - in - relation according to the requirements
of social justice.
A global ethic demands that every human being be treated humanely, that a culture
of non-violence and respect for
life be found, that a culture
of solidarity and a just
economic order be submitted, that truth and tolerance be instigated and that a culture
of equal rights and partnership between
men and women be found.
But neither do we have the reign
of God for the redemption
of society when Christians are unconcerned about the plight
of their fellow
men, or when such giant evils as war, race discrimination, alcoholism,
economic injustice, hunger and homelessness, and the shattering
of family
life go unchallenged.
This may be reformulated in terms
of the Golden Rule, found in various religions, and in terms
of «irrevocable directives» concerning commitment to cultures
of truth and tolerance, nonviolence and respect for
life,
economic justice, and equal rights and partnership between
men and women.
Economic security for all
men means something about colonies, about tariffs, about the free access
of goods to those people who must have raw materials and markets if they are to have in normal times a standard
of living adequate to relieve hunger and permit the free development
of body and spirit.
Let me state them again: faith that peace is possible, provision for peaceful change from within the nations, international organization with the surrender
of absolute national sovereignty,
economic security for all
men, faith in and understanding
of and practice
of the democratic way
of life, and a unifying spiritual world community.
To lift the
economic burdens which depress
life and spoil opportunity, to liberate folk from the slavery
of their diseases, to set
men free by education from the Town
of Stupidity, which, as Bunyan rightly says, is only four degrees north
of the City
of Destruction itself — all these endeavors to give persons a chance to be their best selves are crusades for human emancipation and happiness.
On this basis these
men called for the application
of those teachings to the social and
economic order and the reformation
of all social
life on a new basis.

of the
life of men, those creatures who are described in the Bible as being made both from «dust from the ground» and a «breath or spirit from God» (Genesis 2:7).»
