If you're not going quite that far and just heading to Asia 2, you won't save any miles for those premium
cabin redemptions, and it will actually cost you more in
economy!

Yesterday, while most people's attention was focused on the addition of Premium
Economy redemptions to the Singapore Airlines award chart (more on that in a separate post), the airline slipped in a change to the charts in a way that increased the cost of Premium
Cabin Saver Awards to certain European cities.

That award chart is particularly valuable for premium
cabin redemptions, since business class and first class awards cost 2 and 3 times the cost of
economy, respectively, instead of the 3 and 4 times charged on the standard Executive Club award chart.
I've got a few Virgin Flying Club miles that I was planning to use for a Premium
Economy redemption across the Atlantic as, since the recent changes announced to Flying Club, they're an obvious sweet spot and I didn't think the
cabin and service were too bad when I reviewed it recently.

But it's not nearly enough to just allocate them some kind of uniform valuation, as some miles may be very valuable for a given type of
redemption (e.g. Avios for short - haul
economy awards) and quite a poor value for other types of
redemptions (for Avios, ultra long - haul in a premium
cabin with high mileage cost and often high fuel surcharges).
Redemptions on Japanese domestic flights may only be booked two months from the date of return flight and only in the
economy cabin.
The
redemption rates on Virgin America metal are a bit complex, and not particularly great (40K for transcon return in
economy) but there is an option for Main
Cabin Select
redemption if you're in to that.
