A criticism regularly levelled at
grammar schools is the fact that many children develop later but find themselves excluded
from an academic
education that might have suited them.
The
education secretary is seeking to ensure school pupils emerge
from their
education being able to have a «command of proper spelling, punctuation and
grammar».
The scheme's critics argued that Specialist Schools encouraged segregation in
education, insofar as the middle class parents who were long best placed to ensure favourable outcomes

Throughout the
grammar schools debate there has been an underlying suspicion
from many that the Eton - educated Tory leader is denying others the kind of elite
education that
grammar schools traditionally provided poorer parents.
From these disciplined beginnings sprouted a lifetime of self -
education: teaching himself
grammar when he was 23; teaching himself how to be a surveyor; borrowing Blackstone's law dictionary and teaching himself to be a lawyer.
While it is likely the potential re-introduction of new
grammars into the
education landscape will be promoted as a tool to achieve these aims, fierce opposition
from Labour and the Liberal Democrats will likely question
grammars» viability to deliver such aims.

from the
Education Policy Institute (EPI).

However, determining «best practices» in teaching is far
from a straightforward process, as even professionals disagree over how an effective teacher approaches bilingual
education, homework, student testing, student spelling and
grammar, student - directed learning, «multicultural» lessons, discipline, desk arrangement, scientific inquiry, and so on.

Once prior attainment and pupil background is taken into considering,
grammar schools have no overall impact on pupils» attainment, according to a major new study
from the
Education Policy Institute (EPI).
Jenny Whittle, chairman of the council's
grammar schools and social mobility select committee, said: «We can't impose our recommendations, but I really do believe that there is a spirit of co-operation and a real willingness to see more children
from poorer backgrounds benefit
from a selective
education.»
Where it is different
from the more traditional comprehensive or
grammar school routes is that relationships with industry are considered to be an integral seam between
education and preparing the student for the world of work.

education to students of all ages,
from earlylearning to senior school.
From September 2016, the new
Grammar Stream will provide places for 30 students each year to enjoy a highly academic, Marlborough College backed
education but based in, and part of, Swindon Academy.
Tom Perry, a research fellow
from the University of Birmingham, and research manager at the Centre for the Use of Evidence in
Education, has written a new academic paper on the Progress measures which finds that the measure favours
grammar schools — but his findings offers a solution to fix the bias.

Analysis by
Education Datalab has found that nearly one in five secondary schools (18 per cent) in local authorities that also have
grammar schools would be defined as «coasting» if data
from 2012 - 14 were used.
Recent research
from the
Education Policy Institute showed
grammar school pupils travelled, on average, twice as far to get to school as those attending non-selective schools.
«Opening new
grammar schools would not only be a backward step but is also a complete distraction
from the real problems facing schools and
education.
But Labour's shadow
education secretary Angela Rayner said the government had «cooked the books», but still could not «hide
from the fact that
grammar schools do not aid social mobility».
Yet many of the good and outstanding schools in Kent are
grammars and, according to research
from Education Datalab,
grammar schools in this area are more likely to attract and retain many of the best teachers.
The government statistics watchdog has criticised a tweet
from the Department for
Education that claimed «white working class boys» performed better in
grammar schools than in comprehensives.

Kent's
education chief has called for
grammar schools to open in other counties after figures revealed numbers of pupils coming
from outside Kent.
Gibb first revealed plans for the agreement in his response to a recommendation
from the parliamentary
education committee that the 11 - plus test should not be the only basis for admissions to
grammar schools.
The
education secretary Justine Greening will today defend
grammar schools in a major speech, claiming that selective schools already benefit young people
from «ordinary working class backgrounds».
Fiona Millar,
from the group Comprehensive Future, which campaigns against selective
education, said Sir Michael was right to highlight the divide, arguing that poorer pupils struggle to pass the entrance exam for
grammar schools.
But both Theresa May and Justine Greening, the
education secretary, have claimed they do not want to see a return to the «binary system» of
grammar schools and secondary moderns of the 1950s, and have unveiled plans to force selective schools to take more pupils
from poorer backgrounds.

But since Gove's departure
from the
education department, the revival of
grammar schools has been backed by senior figures such as Theresa May and Boris Johnson.
The issue of
grammar schools has long been a faultline within the Tory party, although Michael Gove as
education secretary had moved the party well away
from supporting selection.
Brian Lightman, an
education consultant and former German teacher, said native speakers might not have a significant advantage under new A-level specifications
from 2018 because of a stronger emphasis on
grammar.
