The next set of Pisa
global education league tables are published next week, and Wales has been lagging far behind the top performing countries such as Finland.
And yet, the UK comes top of the
OECD education league tables for the prevalence of memorisation, rehearsal, routine exercises, drill and practice and / or repetition.
It is consistently ranked at or close to the top in the PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) tables and other
international education league tables, a fact which has made it a focus for educationalists all over the world who want to study the secrets of its success.
Education spokesman Darren Millar AM said: «In spite of all the tough talking and promises to do better from the first minister, today's figures place us, yet again, in the bottom half of the
global education league table and re-confirm Wales» status as the worst performing school system in the UK.»
Sorry, could have pointed out that in 2000, virtually entirely as a result of Tories we were 3 / 4/5 in the international
education league tables and under Labour we are now 13/14/15.
OECD's Lessons from PISA for the United States noted, and I want to quote this exactly: «The higher a country is on the world's
education league tables, the more likely that country is working constructively with its unions and treating its teachers as professional partners.»
