of the ideas in Tony Kaye's Detachment are not revolutionary, especially not to anyone who has followed the last thirty years
of debate

public education system in America (Jonathan Kozel's many works
of nonfiction come to mind).
The results
of this research can offer relevant information for decision - making bodies
regarding public policies in the field
of education.

public schools in New Orleans, without
regard to governance....
Superintendent
of Public Instruction Donald G. Gill asked for $ 900 - million in new money for
education, including $ 134 million for «reform costs,» the costs
of carrying out3board policies
regarding inservice training for teachers and administrators.
Likewise, many
of the ideas we
regard today as
education reform's conventional wisdom - linked standards and assessments, consequences for poor performance, testing new teachers, paying some teachers more than others, and charter schools - were given prominent
public voice by a teacher union leader, the late Albert Shanker
of the American Federation
of Teachers.
There has been a
public outcry
regarding the government's inability to meet some
of the promised benefits, such as free
education and increases in teacher salaries within a specified time frame.

education — there is still a tendency to focus on the disciplines separately, and, frankly, there's a lot
of value in that,» says Heidi Hayes Jacobs, a highly
