Grayson UMC Preschool is
an educational ministry of Grayson United Methodist Church.
The church school (I am using the term «church school» to mean the entire formal
educational ministry of the church involving a wide spectrum of age and interest groups at various times during the week.)
So great and splendid is
the educational ministry of Christian parents that Saint Thomas has no hesitation in comparing it with the ministry of priests: «Some only propagate and guard spiritual life by a spiritual ministry: this is the role of the sacrament of Orders; others do this for both corporal and spiritual life, and this is brought about by the sacrament of marriage, by which a man and a woman join in order to beget offspring and bring them up to worship God.
As one of
the educational ministries of the Church of Christian Liberty located in Arlington Heights, Illinois, we are in touch with the needs of Christian families and Christian schools.

During this year's convention
of the National Association
of Evangelicals, Blair, an NAE member, launched a group called Evangelicals Concerned, which is described as «an
educational task force for
ministry with homosexuals and their families and churches.»
While the primary purpose
of a quinquennial General Conference session is to conduct business, it is also a celebration
of Adventism and its progress; a «fair» where church publishers, departments,
educational and medical institutions and unofficial «self - supporting
ministries» show their wares and garner support; an old - fashioned revival meeting; and a «family gathering» where church employees, in particular, meet former schoolmates and colleagues.
Some
of these challenges are significant: campus
ministries experience hurdles to campus access, Christian adoption and social service agencies confront regulations in tension with their missional convictions, and Christian
educational institutions face threats to their accreditation and tax - exempt status.
Reflecting on his experience
of attending seminary after first gaining considerable experience in the parish, one older participant wondered if maybe we're doing it backwards»; in other words, perhaps schools ought somehow to require practical experience before — or at the beginning
of — formal education (such an arrangement would,
of course, run counter to essentially all currently respected
educational theories) For himself, he said, the practical application
of what was being taught in seminary was plain in light
of his experience
of parish
ministry.
There are two styles
of change agent
ministries, the prophetic and the pastoral care —
educational.
Traditional ways
of segregating age groups from one another can lead pastors or Christian education committees to overlook some viable alternatives to traditional ways
of organizing
educational ministries.
This lack
of agreement, even along the most general lines, is a characteristic feature
of the situation today and accounts in a large measure for the low
educational status
of the
ministry The work
of the lawyer, the physician, the teacher, the artist, the writer and the engineer, is clear - cut and rather sharply defined (at least in the mind
of the average man), so that when a young man chooses one
of these professions he has some idea
of what he is getting into.
To be equipped for
ministry in the world becomes an essential part
of the
educational process.
It provides more than a little
of the reason why so many ministers, especially among the recent seminary graduates, prefer some kind
of social or
educational ministry to service in the local parish.
When the question is one about the education
of the
ministry it will not do to ignore either the general — the theological — nor the particular — the
educational — approach; the theologian as educator or the educator as theologian can not carry on his theological and his
educational critiques separately and independently, nor can he reduce them to one inquiry with one method in the hope
of gaining one single answer.
Yet, to add «family
ministry» as another category in a long list
of educational ministries is a mistake.
Although most
of these attitudes are unfamiliar to mothers in the church today, they remain the presupposition
of educational ministries in most congregations.
The Methodist survey makes it clear that «trends in the
educational ministry, especially as they are reflected in the growth and decline
of the church school, are followed by growth and decline elsewhere in the church.»
I remember clearly the rationale developed to justify campus - based
ministry with students: it called the church «to serve» the university within the context
of the
educational institution.
When the base for
ministry with students is moved from the campus to an extracampus location, it becomes possible to see the church in its own integrity «outside» the university rather than «inside» the structure
of the
educational institutions.
Because our overhead costs are low, we are able to support missionaries throughout the world, Because our members are active, we are able to finance and engage in a variety
of evangelistic,
educational and justice
ministries locally, and to partner with local congregations in many parts
of the world.
It stood for «open church doors every day and all day, free seats, a plurality
of Christian workers, the personal activity
of all church members, [and] a
ministry to all the community through
educational, reformatory and philanthropic channels... «20
