«Loss of oxygen in the ocean is one of the serious side
effects of a warming atmosphere, and a major threat to marine life,» said NCAR scientist Matthew Long, lead author of the study.
So the mechanism of global warming is an indirect effect of increasing CO2, not the direct
effect of warming the atmosphere as is generally believed.
Black carbon has
the effect of warming the atmosphere because it is effective at absorbing sunlight.

Atmospheric dust may have a powerful
effect on climate, absorbing sunlight and
warming the
atmosphere at some altitudes while shading and cooling underlying layers
of air.
Some observers quietly worry that, under Trump, a new focus on climate engineering could become part
of a justification for delaying government action to curb carbon emissions, with the reasoning that geoengineering technologies could later be used to remove carbon from the
atmosphere, or prevent the
warming effects of solar radiation.
An active hydrological cycle would have required a
warmer climate in the planet's early history and therefore a thicker
atmosphere, one capable
of creating a strong greenhouse
effect.
As a result, more

atmosphere, increasing the greenhouse
effect that contributes to global
warming and alters Earth's climate.
Geoengineering — the intentional manipulation

atmosphere — has been mooted as a potential way to deal with climate change.
Research at the Rodale Institute found that «organic farming helps combat global
warming by capturing atmospheric carbon dioxide and incorporating it into the soil, whereas conventional farming exacerbates the greenhouse
effect by producing a net release
of carbon into the
atmosphere.»
This
effect, called climate sensitivity, is usually defined as the
warming caused by the doubling
of the amount
of CO2 in the
atmosphere.
It may seem surprising to people, but you can look at something like Mars, which has a very thin
atmosphere, and you can look at something like Venus which we tend to think
of as sort
of having this rather heavy, clouded
atmosphere, which [is] hellishly
warm because
of runaway greenhouse
effect, and on both
of those planets you are seeing this phenomenon
of the
atmosphere leaking away, is actually what directly has led to those very different outcomes for those planets; the specifics
of what happened as the
atmosphere started to go in each case [made] all the difference.
That's greater than the
warming rate
of either the ocean or the
atmosphere, and it can have profound
effects, the scientists say.
The greenhouse

atmosphere warms a planet's surface.
The cooling
effect of a grand minimum is only a fraction
of the
warming effect caused by the increasing concentration
of carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere.
It's not clear how much
of a greenhouse
effect that would produce, but it's a good bet that Earth would be a lot
warmer — much as it would be, say, if there were no plants drawing carbon dioxide out
of the
atmosphere.
They then selectively removed different plant species such as heather, cotton grass and moss enabling them to study the

atmosphere, reducing their ability to counteract the
effects of global
warming.
The the people in the best position to reconize the

atmosphere have said over and over that global
warming is bullshit.
Also at the AGU meeting, Yasunari's co-author and Goddard colleague William Lau presented the results
of a separate study today suggesting that soot heating the
atmosphere over India could accelerate the glacier - melting
effects of the
warm currents that rise up to the Himalayan chain, in a «heat pump»
effect.
Black carbon
warms the
atmosphere because
of its ability to absorb radiation from the sun, but its
effect can be especially pernicious in polar regions, where, falling on bright ice, the soot diminishes the regions» ability to reflect away heat.
A northwards branch
of the gulf stream, the North Atlantic Drift, is part
of the thermohaline circulation (THC), transporting warmth further north to the North Atlantic, where its
effect in
warming the
atmosphere contributes to
warming Europe.
So even without concerns about the

atmosphere, the Paris agreement goes a long way toward reducing harmful air pollution worldwide.
He makes the point, for example, that when you are looking [talking] about global
warming, when you're looking at the climate [and] the
atmosphere, you are talking about in
effect a good that belongs to all
of us.
El Niño — a
warming of tropical Pacific Ocean waters that changes weather patterns across the globe — causes forests to dry out as rainfall patterns shift, and the occasional unusually strong «super» El Niños, like the current one, have a bigger
effect on CO2 levels in the
atmosphere.
Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the U.K. and U.S. did note that they bore a large share
of responsibility for the greenhouse gas pollution currently in Earth's
atmosphere and its resulting
warming effect.
global
warming The gradual increase in the overall temperature
of Earth's
atmosphere due to the greenhouse
effect.
Another process knows as a «runaway greenhouse» occurs due to the increased greenhouse

atmosphere, which further drives evaporation and more
warming.
Greenhouse
effect The

Scientists have modelled the expected temperature drop over the 21st century due to waning solar activity — and they found that the change is likely to be dwarfed by the much bigger
warming effect of greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere.
While the
warming atmosphere and higher humidity can provide more energy for these storms, the climate change

of research.
Global
warming in the modern era is being driven by increasing concentrations
of greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere, which leads to an enhanced greenhouse
effect.
Thus far, Kepler has found 48 planetary candidates in their host star's habitable zone (
of which 10 are near Earth - size), but this number is a decrease from the 54 reported in February 2011 only because the Kepler team is now applying a stricter definition
of what constitutes a habitable zone around stars to account for the
warming effect of planetary
atmospheres, which would move such a zone away from the star, outwards in orbital distance resulting in longer orbital periods (NASA news release; and Kepler Press Conference slides — in pdf).
Such changes are driven in large part by the greenhouse
effect, the trapping
of greenhouse gases in Earth's
atmosphere and consequent
warming of the planet.
Re the cost
of flying, there are lots
of assumptions around because
of different ways
of using or ignoring a 1999 report on aviation's role in global
warming [Aviation and the Global
Atmosphere] for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change — the
effects of flying are much worse than would be predicted by just burning the oil.
Global climate change will occur as a result
of global

The
warming trends in looking at numerous 100 year temperature plots from northern and high elevation climate stations... i.e.
warming trends in annual mean and minimum temperature averages, winter monthly means and minimums and especially winter minimum temperatures and dewpoints... indicate climate
warming that is being driven by the accumulation
of greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere — no visible
effects from other things like changes in solar radiation or the levels
of cosmic rays.
For example, they predicted the expansion

According to Sir Nicholas, «Scientists have been refining their assessment
of the probable degree

This is a peer reviewed paper by respected scientists who are saying that aerosol forcing means that the majority
of the
warming caused by existing co2 emission has effectively been masked thus far, and that as aerosols remain in the
atmosphere for far shorter a duration
of time than co2, we will have already most likely crossed the 2 degree threshold that the G8 politicians have been discussing this week once the cooling
effect of aerosols dissipate.
And as we learn from the Skeptical Science article I linked to earlier, there is going to be a delay
of «decades» between the
effects of the CO2 emissions in question (i.e., the heating
of the
atmosphere due to the greenhouse
effect) and a corresponding
warming of the oceans.
The Skeptical Science site refers to a paper by Flanner in 2009, a summary
of which can be found here http://www.cgd.ucar.edu/tss/ahf/, that shows the direct heat from burning fossil fuels is just 1 %

effect of the CO2 produced by this burning on the absorption
of heat by the
atmosphere from the sun, i.e. global
warming.
Now, if
warming also causes increased CO2, then we may be talking about a positive feedback loop in which the
warming spirals upwards, which amplifies the
warming effect of whatever CO2 we humans contribute to the
atmosphere.
In fact, as the
atmosphere warms, the «atmospheric window» tends toward closing (particularly because
of water vapor

As detailed in section V
of this notice, it is widely recognized that greenhouse gases (GHGs) have a climatic
warming effect by trapping heat in the
atmosphere that would otherwise escape to space.
