While can't break out of transgender narrative stereotypes, it's still

Director John Hillcoat and writer Joe Penhall's film is not an easy one to watch, but they deserve credit for transforming a beautifully effective novel into an equally
effective piece of cinema.
While that is a very definite part of why the film is one of the most
effective pieces of cinema I've ever seen, I'm glad it's being noticed because of the very real issue that it tackles — hidden pedophilia within the Catholic Church.
