learning practices; developing
effective systems designs; and building public understanding and

In order to improve teaching and
learning in the United States and keep up with changing
demands on
students, teachers, and schools, policymakers and education officials must make systemic changes to all aspects of the teaching profession: recruiting; training; developing; retaining; and supporting teachers with
effective leaders and professional
learning environments.
Interest and
demand for online
learning options for K - 12
students have surged in recent years due to their potential to provide cost -
effective means of expanding instructional options and cater to
students who've grown up using the internet for both informal and formal
learning.
The Foundation maintains an online library of lessons at www.wallacefoundation.org about what it has
learned, including knowledge from its current efforts aimed at: strengthening educational leadership to improve
student achievement; helping disadvantaged
students gain more time for
learning through summer
learning and through the
effective use of additional
learning time during the school day and year; enhancing out - of - school time opportunities; and building appreciation and
demand for the arts.
The Literacy Design Collaborative organization will equip teachers with the tools and training needed to effectively implement College and Career Readiness Standards in K — 12 classrooms so that all
students experience
effective teaching and
learning in all subject areas throughout their schooling and emerge prepared to meet the
demands of citizenry in the 21st century.
Principals have to manage, lead, and are held accountable for: common core; technology initiatives; social and emotional
learning; referendum initiatives; math implementation; science implementation; special education, community outreach; reading; testing (local and state);
effective instruction; transportation; public relations, parent custody issues, residency;
student and staff discipline, evaluations; hiring; parent complaints; bullying; safety issues; budgeting; human resources issues; immigration questions / concerns; school safety, visibility in and out of school; championing the never ending requests and
demands from the central office (one of the biggest challenges); the constantly increasing
demands around social media and communications; and the barrage of emails / texts
demanding immediate response 24/7, just to name a few.
