Statistics released recently by the State Department of Health show Suffolk holds 49 percent of the state's babesiosis cases and 44 percent
of Ehrlichiosis cases.
The treatment for canine anaplasmosis is the same as that for other closely related tickborne infections
including ehrlichiosis and Lyme disease: the antibiotic doxycycline.
In addition to testing for heartworm disease, the test we commonly use here at Orange Grove Animal Hospital also tests for tick borne diseases such
as Ehrlichiosis, known as Tick Fever and Lyme disease.
Canine
monocytic ehrlichiosis causes hyperglobulinemia (high globulin levels in the blood), lethargy, depression and bleeding tendencies.
I do not recall seeing a recommendation from an infectious disease specialist to stop vaccinating dogs after infection
with ehrlichiosis, though.
Keeping in mind what was noted above about the numbers actually being 3X what is reported, the data tells us that approximately 1 in 16 dogs tested for Lyme were positive, 1 in 33 dogs tested
for ehrlichiosis were positive, and 1 in 26 dogs tested for anaplasmosis were positive.
Although
preventing Ehrlichiosis is not easy, avoiding areas that are heavily infested with ticks is one measure that can be taken.
Ehrlichiosis in dogs is usually spread by the brown dog tick and lone star tick.
Attacking its victim's white blood cells, E. chaffeensis causes a disease
called ehrlichiosis, characterized by fever, malaise, body aches, and, if left untreated, organ failure.
If the infection goes untreated, clinical
Ehrlichiosis occurs because the immune system is not able to eliminate the organism.
Because their errant tee shots force them to wander into high grass or forest, duffers are more likely to get the tick - borne disease

Generally, a combination of the dog's history, symptoms, and the results of lab tests are used to
diagnose ehrlichiosis.

reveal ehrlichiosis, the tick - borne disease that is most common in the area.

Pets treated with certain types of antibiotics (e.g., doxycycline) and sometimes blood transfusions and / or immunosuppressive medications will generally recover
from ehrlichiosis.
People can
contract ehrlichiosis through the bite of infected ticks but not through contact with a sick pet.
Other diseases carried by ticks that attach to pets include
ehrlichiosis relapsing fever, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia.
Some titers... rather than indicating protection... either indicate actual infection (e.g. Feline Immunodeficiency Virus «FIV» which is diagnosed by the presence of antibodies)... or simply indicate exposure without indicating infection or protection (
e.g. Ehrlichiosis)
This may introduce the tick borne diseases, such as Lyme Disease and
Ehrlichiosis into your pet.
Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and
Ehrlichiosis represent the most serious health threats posed by ticks to both animals and humans alike.

This may be problematic in the case of an illness
like ehrlichiosis where there is some question over the ability to ever reliably cure a patient and therefore some risk of recurrence of the illness when immunosuppression occurs for any reason.
Lyme Disease, as well as Anaplasmosis and to a lesser
extent Ehrlichiosis, are significant threats to you and your dog, especially during the warmer months of the year.
Each progression from one phase to the next makes treating
Ehrlichiosis more difficult and this is why early detection is very important for treatment to be successful.

A simple blood test can detect the presence of Lyme disease and other common tick - borne diseases in your dog, such
as ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis.
Symptoms of
monocytic ehrlichiosis includes discharge from the nose, avoidance of food (anorexia), weight loss, weakness, depression and internal bleeding.
So far at the Park Road Vet Clinic we have diagnosed 3 dogs with Lyme disease, 2 dogs
with Ehrlichiosis and 2 dogs with Anaplasmosis.
