A growing concern over the use of these electronic dog training devices, also known as
shock collars, dog training e-
collars,
electric dog
collars, is heavily researched
in the scientific community.
Earlier this year, the U.K. government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs published a report that was commissioned to examine the use, effectiveness and ethics of
electric shock collar use
in canines.
Most dog
shock collars vary
in production of
electric stimuli, which is another factor that needs to be considered when assessing the use of these devices.
I considered an
electric shock collar but worried that
in the hands of an amateur... it might do more harm than good.
In pets,
electric shock collars are an example of positive punishment, giving something unwanted to the pet to lessen the likelihood of the activity reoccurring.
Advocates of these devices claim that

Electric shock collars, you stand accused of being one of the single most vivid examples of man's ability to use modern technology to the detriment of all that is natural and justified
in the animal kingdom.
How many times must we hear the argument that
electric shock collars have saved the lives of dogs considered to be too unruly or too untrustworthy to co-exist
in human society?
On the other side of the fence are those espousing for the full use of
electric shock collars as a means of correcting undesirable behaviour and to instill obedience
in their pet canines.
The short debate follows Matthew Offord's Ten Minute Rule Bill presented
in the House of Commons earlier this year which calls for a ban on the sale and use of
electric shock collars.
The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) funded two pieces of research on
electric shock collars which were published last summer and show that
electric shock collars can cause long term negative behavioural and physiological changes
in dogs, even when used by professional trainers following an industry set standard of training.
The Kennel Club commissioned an independent survey on public opinion
in England regarding
electric shock collars which found that 72 % of the public disapprove of the use of
electric shock collars and 74 % would support the government
in introducing a ban on
electric shock collars.
I have 3 dogs and just over 5 acres of land with nothing but trees on it I would have had to cut down almost 100 trees to to build a fence so I got the

shock myself a few times til it wasn't that bad but my dogs don't even let it get that far if they hear the beep which comes before the

electric shock collars have no place
in a civilised society.
Similarly the two largest German Shepherd Dog clubs
in the country (the British Association for German Shepherd Dogs and the German Shepherd Dog League of Great Britain) have banned the use of
electric shock collars from their training grounds.
Punishments such as leash jerks and
collar corrections, hitting, poking, «nudging,» kicking, hanging by the
collar, or using
electric shock or spray
collars may be effective
in suppressing behavior at that moment, but these tools and techniques do little to solve the problem
in the long term and can make a dog's behavior much worse
in the future.
Electric shock collars are already outlawed
in a number of countries worldwide, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Slovenia, and
in most states
in Australia.
The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) published two research studies last year which demonstrated negative behavioural and physiological changes
in dogs which were trained with
electric shock collars.
Furthermore, some of the most highly trained dogs
in the world, including police dogs, armed forces dogs and assistance dogs are trained without the use of
electric shock collars.
Despite this, Westminster has still to take action and follow
in Wales» footsteps
in banning
electric shock collars, and the Kennel Club hopes that the findings of its new research will let the government know that the public would be behind them on a ban.

shock collars for dogs results
in aggression, stress or persistent anxiety.
