EPFL scientists have carried out a genomic and evolutionary study of a large and enigmatic family of human proteins, to demonstrate that it is responsible for harnessing the millions of transposable
elements in the human genome.
The latest chapter in our story is ENCODE; an ambitious project which aims to characterise all the functional
element in the human genome.
One hint came in August, when a team led by biochemist Ramin Shiekhattar at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia reported that a protein complex responsible for lashing the two copies of each chromosome together just before cell division binds to a repetitive
element in the human genome.
ENCODE was created to assemble a comprehensive catalog, or «parts list,» of all functional
elements in the human genome.
«We are making great strides in identifying functional
elements in the human genome, but we still don't know much about their biological relevance,» said NHGRI Director Francis S. Collins, MD, PhD.

A second, perhaps less - hyped initiative (called the Encyclopedia of DNA Elements, or ENCODE) set out to delineate all functional
elements in the human genome.
The goal of ENCODE is to build a comprehensive parts list of functional
elements in the human genome, including elements that act at the protein and RNA levels, and regulatory elements that control cells and circumstances in which a gene is active.

The findings, published in Nature, reveal millions of new regulatory
