In contrast, some other prayer forms — including those shaped by the formula
of the acronym ACTS (
adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication), so popular in some traditions — may serve to balance
elements of prayer, but not necessarily in a way that helps us think about the flow or connections between the
elements.
In the preceding chapter there was an outline
of the constituent
elements that make up a natural sequence
of prayer, with a more detailed analysis
of the place
of adoration and thanksgiving.
The
adoration, thanksgiving, acknowledgment
of sin, prayer for others and for self, which, as we have seen, are integral
elements in the whole action
of worship, have their significance in the total giving
of self, so that the sovereign Will
of God may be effected in worshiper and world.
It will be recalled that in describing the nature
of worship, in its most general sense, we found that there were five
elements which form the action
of the believer in his cultic approach to deity:
Adoration, or praise; thanksgiving; acknowledgement
of failure or sin; prayer for others; prayer for oneself.
Those concerns are heightened when the
adoration is not just a one - sided thing in which the object
of the celebrity treatment takes no part in it and does not encourage it, but one in which the object rather seems to enjoy and participate in that phenomenon, and / or takes to making general public pronouncements on various issues, which is a common
element in modern American celebrity culture.
