Your dog's location options are: in the crate, on a leash attached to you, in the x-pen or bathroom with an
appropriate elimination spot available within a few feet from you, or outside with you.
Always take your dog to
his elimination spot on leash, just as if you were house training him all over again.
However, it should not be so large that your puppy could use a corner of the crate as
an elimination spot.
Some dogs will even intentionally mark another dog's
elimination spot, as if in a way, they were laying claim to that area.
The odor and familiarity of
an elimination spot will bring a puppy back to eliminate those same affected areas if not cleaned properly.
Ideally it is best to teach a dog to hold everything in until you are able to walk the dog outside to
its elimination spot.
When puppy cries, get up and take him to
his elimination spot — either a puppy pad near the door, or outside.Don't allow your puppy to eliminate in his crate.
