Conclusions: Our findings suggest that targeted malaria control will benefit the surrounding community, but unfortunately also that
emerging drug resistance will spread rapidly through the population.
Additional uses include precise diagnosis of microbial infection, describing transmission patterns, understanding the genomics of
emerging drug resistance and identifying targets for new therapeutics and vaccines.

The memorandum of understanding identified four areas in the life sciences where AAAS and the Cuban Academy of Sciences will seek opportunities for sustained cooperation:
emerging infectious diseases, brain disorders, cancer, and antimicrobial
drug resistance.
Resistance to the
drug had not
emerged in part because it was typically only used when other
drugs had failed.
Globalization, changing climate, and the threat of
drug resistance have conspired to set the stage for that perfect microbial storm: a situation in which an
emerging pathogen — another HIV or smallpox, perhaps — might burst on the scene and kill millions before we can respond.
PAILIN, CAMBODIA — No one knows exactly why
resistance to malaria
drugs always
emerges first in this remote western province of Cambodia, nestled in the Cardamom Mountains.
The World Health Organization (WHO) released a plan today to deal with a threat that could undermine the recent success in malaria control: the
emerging resistance against artemisinin
drugs, which are the cornerstone of malaria treatment worldwide.
Over the past few years, researchers have seen
resistance against artemisinin derivatives — which are combined with other
drugs in so - called artemisinin - based combination therapies —
emerge in Cambodia, in an area along the border with Thailand.
«We on the outside of the US are gravely concerned about the
drug resistance emerging in the US,» said Peter Davies, a TB researcher at Sefton General Hospital, Liverpool.
This understanding may eventually help us to stem the rise of
drug - resistant malaria, such as the
emerging resistance to artemisinins,» said Lisewski.
There are signs of
emerging resistance even to the latest generation of
drugs being rolled out, the highly effective artemisinin - based
drugs, triggering worries that the world might soon be left empty - handed (Science, 19 December 2008, p. 1776).
«Understanding how the
drugs work gives us the opportunity to investigate new treatments, for example by using combination therapies, or altering the dosage and timing of treatment to prevent
drug resistance from
emerging,» Dr Glaser said.
New research demonstrates that harnessing competition among pathogens inside a patient could extend the life of existing
drugs where
resistance is already present and prevent
resistance to new
drugs from
emerging.
Chloroquine has become ineffective against malaria, and
resistance to the other frontline
drugs is
emerging,» says senior author of the study Professor Dominic Kwiatkowski, of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and Oxford University.
In many cases, these successive waves of
drug resistance first
emerged in the same part of Southeast Asia, the Lower Mekong region, and then spread to other malaria endemic areas.
This is an impressive achievement but these gains are threatened by
emerging resistance to the frontline antimalarial
drug, artemisinin.
Assist disease control by providing up - to - date geographical information about known and newly -
emerging forms of
drug resistance, by examining genetic variation in the context of how whole pathogen genomes are evolving rather than as fragmentary information about individual genetic changes or polymorphisms.
As the TRAC study sites were selected to target areas of
emerging resistance, samples will include parasites that are artemisinin resistant alongside sensitive parasites — those that are more easily killed off by the
drug.
«Encouraged by promising predictions from the mathematical model, we completed a detailed laboratory study using parasites from Cambodia where
drug -
resistance is
emerging,» Professor Tilley said.
Recent spread of artemisinin
resistance and
emerging piperaquine
resistance in Southeast Asia show that artemisinin combination therapy, such as dihydroartemisinin - piperaquine, are losing clinical effectiveness, prompting investigation of
drug resistance mechanisms and development of strategies to surmount
emerging anti-malarial
resistance.
Background: As the prevalence of artemisinin - resistant Plasmodium falciparum malaria increases in the Greater Mekong subregion,
emerging resistance to partner
drugs in artemisinin combination therapies seriously threatens global efforts to treat and eliminate this disease.
«If a
drug is used less, then less
resistance emerges,» said Patricia Griffin, chief of intestinal disease epidemiology for the Center for Disease Control.
