The argument for CCS is that if we can capture and sequester
the emissions from these fossil fuel reserves, then we can tap them; we can deal with the climate crisis yet avoid these assets being stranded.

There are sufficient
fossil fuel resources to readily supply 1000 GtC, as
fossil fuel emissions to date (370 GtC) are only a small fraction of potential
emissions from known
reserves and potentially recoverable resources (Fig. 2).
Even after decades of increasingly dire warnings, the US has still not passed comprehensive federal legislation to combat global warming; Canada has abandoned past pledges in order to exploit its
emissions - heavy tar sands; China continues to depend on coal for its energy production; Indonesia's effort to stem widespread deforestation is facing stiff resistance
from industry; Europe is mulling pulling back on its more ambitious cuts if other nations do not join it; northern nations are scrambling to exploit the melting Arctic for untapped oil and gas
reserves; and
fossil fuels continue to be subsidized worldwide to the tune of $ 400 billion.

emissions from fossil fuel companies, particularly carbon dioxide
emissions embedded in their
reserve and resource base;
The vulnerability of an investment in
fossil fuel reserves or hardware to competition
from renewable energy and decarbonization doesn't just depend on the carbon intensity of the
fuel type — its
emissions per equivalent barrel or BTU — but also on its functions and unique attributes.
Although the burning of
fossil fuels generates most of the potential
emissions from most
reserves,
emissions from production and processing operations (known as «upstream
emissions») can also be important, depending on the
reserve type and technologies used.
Well, there is a lot of magical thinking built into the models,
from unrealistic
emission scenarios that disregard proven
fossil fuel reserves, to made up sensitivity values
from overestimated aerosol forcings and underestimated solar forcings, and made up feedbacks.
Not a single
fossil fuel company in the world discloses potential
emissions from their
reserves of oil, gas and coal — and that is a big problem.
