Some of these seem to be linked by a shared
emotional basis: the «endowment effect» (overvaluation of what we already have), «status quo
bias» (an
emotional preference for maintaining the status quo), and «loss aversion» (the tendency to attribute much more weight to potential losses than potential gains when assessing risk) are all related to an innate conservatism
about what we feel we have already invested in.
In couples therapy, in addition to exploring these given
biases, we work to create conversations
about emotional labor that aren't blaming.
In a related vein, consistent with theories on
emotional contagion according to which intimate partners are highly vulnerable to each other's emotions (Goodman and Shippy 2002), it is conceivable that mothers are
biased toward negative emotions due to their partners» psychological difficulties, leading mothers to talk more
about these emotions with their children.
