Three studies that explored symptoms of

Even when a child or adolescent is well known in a pediatric practice, only 50 % of those with clinically significant behavioral and

found similarly high failure of detection rates ranging from 14 % to 40 %.22, 24 Surveyed pediatricians, however, overwhelmingly endorse that they should be responsible for identifying children with ADHD, eating

findings, and suggest that women with eating
disorders are proficient at using
disordered eating behaviors to manipulate their experience of both positive and negative
emotional states, and that this dynamic should be recognized as an important maintenance factor.
A review of twenty studies on the adult lives of antisocial adolescent girls
found higher mortality rates, a variety of psychiatric problems, dysfunctional and violent relationships, poor educational achievement, and less stable work histories than among non-delinquent girls.23 Chronic problem behavior during childhood has been linked with alcohol and drug abuse in adulthood, as well as with other mental health problems and
disorders, such as
emotional disturbance and depression.24 David Hawkins, Richard Catalano, and Janet Miller have shown a similar link between conduct
disorder among girls and adult substance abuse.25 Terrie Moffitt and several colleagues
found that girls diagnosed with conduct
disorder were more likely as adults to suffer from a wide variety of problems than girls without such a diagnosis.26 Among the problems were poorer physical health and more symptoms of mental illness, reliance on social assistance, and victimization by, as well as violence toward, partners.
Significant advances have been made in assessment methods and age - appropriate diagnostic criteria for
emotional disorders in young children.29 - 31 Differentiation between symptoms of individual anxiety
disorders (e.g., separation anxiety, generalized anxiety) has been
found as early as two years of age.6 One novel assessment tool for children aged 3 - 5, the Preschool Anxiety Scale — Revised, captures these various dimensions of anxiety symptoms.32 In addition, attentional bias to threat has been identified as a possible candidate for assessment of risk for anxiety
disorders.33
Research from the United States reported prevalence rates as high as 9 % for anxiety
disorders and 2 % for depression among preschool children.4 A recent study in Scandinavia also
found 2 % of children to be affected by depression, but rates for anxiety
disorders were much lower (1.5 %).5 While most childhood fears and transient sadness are normative, some children suffer from
emotional problems that cause significant distress and impairment, limiting their ability to develop age - appropriate social and pre-academic skills and / or participate in age - appropriate activities and settings.
This tendency to manifest
disorders of a psychosocial nature is consistent with Rousseau, Drapeau and Corin (1996) who
found a positive association between learning difficulties, academic achievement and
emotional problems in South East Asian and Central American refugee children in the US.

Hence,
findings add to the growing acknowledgement (Butler 2011; Granic 2005; Houben et al. 2015) that a focus on the real - time dynamic nature of emotions, particularly dyadic
emotional flexibility, during parent - child interactions is important for understanding anxiety
disorders.
Our
findings strengthen empirical evidence for the use of the parent - reported SDQ as a screening tool for DSM - IV behavioral and
emotional disorders in adolescents identified in the general population.
A recent meta - analysis of data from 28 studies revealed that paternal depression is associated with a significant decrease in positive paternal parenting practices, which may serve as a mechanism by which depression is transmitted between generations.46 As noted elsewhere, the literature is much more extensive regarding the effects of maternal depression than of paternal depression, and suggests that

Our results are in line with other neuroimaging studies that have
found reduced activations to different kinds of affective stimuli within the brain
emotional systems in violent adult subjects and in adolescents with conduct
disorder.
