of employment in providing a self - image for people, giving them standing in the community, a sense
of personal worth, a role
as family provider, a network
of peers, and
way of life are not part
of the economics curriculum, so can be assumed not to matter.
This may look like working within the community
as a partner, it may look like supporting active work, it may look like participating in a big
life - changing
way, foster care advocacy, it may look like writing to our government,
employment, opportunity, friendship, or perhaps protesting or participating, it may look like advocating for these changes and opportunities at the highest levels
of government.
While I don't agree that the church's «message should be one
of... finding a partner, getting married and sticking together» — given the many
ways to
live well today, that's an extremely narrow and heteronormative view — the book does speak to the
ways the church is a place
of support, friendship and guidance for men, whether by offering engaging activities (at the risk
of sounding cliche, group sporting events for example) or teaching classes to build marketable skills or acting
as an
employment center to help them find meaningful careers with decent wages or offering essential mental health counseling.
These changes are brought about principally by the increased participation
of women in
employment, but this has led to a cultural shift in the
way men view caring for children —
as women's aspirations have changed, so have men's: the desire to participate more in the
lives of their children is growing in all social groups, particularly among younger parents.

lives as a
way to remove stubborn barriers to

It is shown to them in the racist
way in which they perceive they are treated by many non-Indigenous people in a wide variety
of circumstances, in the material poverty
of their
lives and the
lives of their extended families and their general communities, and in the
way they are discriminated against in
employment, in the
way they are housed and in their lack
of access to health and education services
as good
as those available to non-Indigenous people.
