Although anal glands are meant to
empty as stools are passed, this doesn't happen with all dogs and over time, the anal glands fill up and can become inflamed and painful.
These glands should ideally
empty when dogs pass sturdy
stool, but sometimes they fail to
empty as they should due in part to chronic loose
stool, excess weight, conformation, etc..
