The pleasures of minimal clarity combined with the powers of pure color are represented by the reductive
encaustic work of Gail Gregg, Don Voisine's painting with its shifting bright planes, and in James Juszczyk's subtle tonal gradations.

of her career, Mary Frank has
worked in sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking and recently
encaustic and photography, suggesting that her primary loyalty is not to a particular way

work aims to build upon their earlier technology
of paint and brush by incorporating multi-media elements
of photography,
encaustic and collage.
Each painting was born out
of his earlier narrative paintings that have been
worked and re-
worked into geometric compositions recording each moment with a variety
of gestures and mixed materials including oil paint,
encaustic and collage.
David A. Clark has
worked in a variety
of media, but it is in the use
of encaustic on handmade papers where he has reached full - stride in his
work.

works with a cool palette
of dark blue / teal, beige, pumpkin orange, and taupe on white, finishing the

It was only later that I became sufficiently attuned to painting as a medium to recognise fully the richness and complexity
of facture alone
of the
encaustic works.
Inspired by the Sumi brush paintings
of Zen masters, this recent body
of 2 dimensional
encaustic works are an attempt to capture movement: fluid, gestural, spontaneous, whole body movement, as in a dance.
His use
of encaustic, with its physicality, impasto and transparencies, allows him to create figurative
works in which the gesture, the actual act
of painting, is just as important and meaningful as the depicted subject.
Dealing at last with Johns's Catenary series, Cézanne's
work alongside Camille Pissarro, his portrait

of Brice Marden all amounted for me to a kind
of atonement.
This Conference has been raising the bar for artists who
work in the medium
of encaustic since its» inception, but this year impressed me as particularly touching in the way it encouraged attendees to follow their true instincts as artists.
Ms. Winiarski also holds the position
of featured artworks editor for ProWax Journal, a quarterly online publication for professional artists
working in the medium
of encaustic, and moderates ProWax Forum, an online discussion group where questions regarding
encaustic materials, technique, and vision are answered.

Robin Rose (American, born 1946)
works within the demanding field
of encaustic painting.
She
works with the ancient technique
of encaustic wax, a combination
of beeswax, resin and pigments in which heat serves as the active solvent.
Cheryl makes architecturally inspired
work that utilizes
encaustic and 3D printing to discuss issue
of space — how we think about it and maneuver through it.
These artists also bear the influence
of their instructor, whose
work is in the show, especially in their use
of encaustic.

In these
works he interweaves photographically derived imagery with networks
of gestural marks, using egg tempera, oils and
encaustic in various combinations.
Contemporary
encaustic works exhibit a wide range
of styles and imagery.
This color is itself cut with beeswax, at a low enough level not to conjure up associations with well known purveyors
of the
encaustic technique, like Jasper Johns and Brice Marden; it instead increases the sensation
of the paint as dense and saturated, and gives it a subtle, changing play
of light over the surface as the viewer moves around the
work.
While Lawrence employed photography and illusionistic devices in his constructions, Gauthier incorporates photographic enlargements
of installations in her mixed - media
works, combining these images with
encaustic and graphite on wood.
This
encaustic medium, once manipulated by the deft touches
of Marden's palette knife, yielded a sculptural nuance to the surface
of the
work.
A juried exhibition
of encaustic works.
The
work — in different sizes and mediums — from prints to acrylics, oils, and
encaustics randomly arranged — made an ideal setting for a conversation that meandered from the consistency
of the 68 year - old artist's career trajectory to the inevitable differences between older and newer
works.
