Successful Learners: School trips have the potential to lay strong foundations for
encouraging successful learning and building positive attitudes which subsequently lead to
improvements in achievement and motivation in all areas — including
academic.
While not mandated, the initiative

academic improvement — because print textbooks are expensive and digital content can be more personalized.

Research behind VAL - ED (the Vanderbilt Assessment of Leadership in Education tool to assess principal performance, developed by researchers at Vanderbilt University) suggests that there are six key steps - or «processes» - that the effective principal takes when carrying out his or her most important leadership responsibilities: planning, implementing, supporting, advocating, communicating and monitoring.40 The school leader pressing for high
academic standards would, for example, map out rigorous targets for
improvements in learning (planning), get the faculty on board to do what's necessary to meet those targets (implementing),
encourage students and teachers in meeting the goals (supporting), challenge low expectations and low district funding for students with special needs (advocating), make sure families are aware of the learning goals (communicating), and keep on top of test results (monitoring).41
The same study also found that students participating in a «sense - of - purpose» program, which
encouraged students to reflect on ways in which their daily classroom activities connected to lifelong goals, also led to
academic improvements.4
The EOCEP
encourages instruction in the specific
academic standards for the courses,
encourages student achievement, and documents the level of students» mastery of the
academic standards.To meet federal accountability requirements, the EOCEP in mathematics, English / language arts and science will be administered to all public school students by the third year of high school, including those students as required by the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education
Improvement Act (IDEA) and by Title 1 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).
Today's findings add to the trend of positive news about
academic improvement in Arizona, following on the heels of
encouraging NAEP and AzMERIT scores that show charter students ranking second in the country and outperforming state averages in every grade level and subject area.
ASU pioneered the iTeachAZ program, which the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Innovation and
Improvement recognized as a model program in 2014.42 The program partners with local schools to utilize school sites for its undergraduate classes, where clinical faculty are based, and
encourage practical applications of more theoretical pedagogy.43 The program places student teachers in local elementary and middle schools for an
academic year, and partners students with mentor teachers to facilitate learning and provide guidance.
They are clearly wrestling with a critical tension between making sure their school's
academic program is coherent (a key ingredient in any school
improvement strategy) and a desire to
encourage experimentation and innovation.
