The Toronto International Film Festival, which
ended Sunday, has long been a proving ground for Oscar
buzz, a preview of the next few months in cinema where movies either begin to build critical momentum for a major
awards campaign or wither on the vine.
As usual by the year's
end, there are still several films capturing
awards buzz that haven't come to Wichita yet (such as «Call Me By Your Name,» «The Shape of Water» or «Phantom Thread»).
Awards obsessives spend months speculating, tracking patterns, tuning in to the yay - or - nay
buzz, consulting and re-consulting our tea leaves — but at the
end of the day, nobody knows anything except the person holding that little envelope.
The R - rated films, timed to attract
award buzz, both failed to receive any major honors or generate much interest from the public, each
ending up with a domestic gross slightly over $ 10 million.
Oscar voters are also notoriously easy marks for war films as well so don't be shocked if this starts getting year -
end award consideration

«Hustle & Flow» has plenty of heart, so it's no real surprise that it cruised out of Sundance teeming with critical
buzz, and while it may not win any
awards by year's
end, it represents a great trip to the movies and an addictive tune that may well stay in your head for the entire weekend.
