The gearbox, with its snappy, short - throw shift, is a great partner for the sparkling six, and the brakes, while laughably grumbly (in finest M tradition) and a little over-servoed at the top -
end of the pedal travel, stand up well to fast road driving.

The
pedal just isn't that linear: There's an inch or so
of limp
pedal travel at first, and it's too grabby at the
end to manage smooth stops easily.
The stiff, short -
travel clutch
pedal felt especially strange at the
end of a workday during which I had driven our Four Seasons Volkswagen Jetta TDI (one
of the smoothest - driving cars I've ever piloted).
Add in a brake
pedal with zero feel for half its
travel plus massive A - and C - pillars that block large sections
of traffic, and you
end up with a thoroughly unenjoyable evening's driving.

end of its short

This also means that the driver must dive deep into the
pedal travel to summon the upper
end of the engine's power reserves, which can result in an initial delay followed by a surge
of power (and noise) from the engine.
