At
the end of the tomb will be some writing behind two torches.

For example, the gospel
of Mark
ends at 16:8 with the women leaving the empty
tomb so scared that they do not tell anyone about what happened there.
Most new testament scholars say that the Gospel
of Mark originally
ended with the story
of the women who go to the cemetery, only to encounter a mysterious young man pointing to Jesus» empty
tomb and announcing the resurrection.
God will soon bring an
end to all
of our suffering, and he will ressurect all
of those in the memorial
tombs (our dead loved ones) to a judgment.
First, it is plain that the empty
tomb was not the originating factor since careful critical study
of the material found at the

of Mark, (16: 9 - 20) were a later addition, -LRB-(most scholars agree the original gospel
ended with the (far more poetic), empty
tomb)-RRB-.
A more likely explanation was first put forward by Wellhausen, 15 and it has been widely adopted.16 This states that the story
of the discovery
of the empty
tomb ends with these strange words in order to explain to readers why, as late as the mid-first century, they had never heard
of this story before.
For this as well as for other reasons C. F. Evans is justified in saying that John's version «would seem to represent an
end - product
of the development
of the story
of the empty
tomb».32
We can certainly say that his real climax is in the Passion narrative, for the
tomb pericope which now
ends the Gospel has little
of the Easter joy and human interest that are to be found in John's
tomb story.
Mark is a bit skimpy, starting only with baptism
of Jesus,
ending with empty
tomb and promise
of future sightings in Galilee.
As for specialties in the individual narratives, Matthew alone records the sealing and guarding
of the
tomb and he alone introduces an earthquake; Luke expands the story
of the revelation on the road to Emmaus, which Mark's addition suggests, and introduces the meal
of broiled fish partaken
of by Jesus to prove the reality
of his resuscitation; John alone, at the
end of the century, narrates at length the conversation between Jesus and Mary Magdalene and records the scene between Jesus and Thomas and the appearance by the Sea
of Galilee.
In 1943, mourning the
end of a short - lived love affair that would leave her (even months later) sitting «desolately by the fire shivering uncontrollably with an aching head and longing to be cherished,» Barbara Pym recorded walking by a pre-Raphaelite
tomb and brooding a little.
As we look down the vista — whether
of the history
of the people
of God or
of our own lives — it
ends with inevitable death and a
tomb; but beyond the
tomb lies Easter Day.
One
of the challenges
of this view is that if Mark truly
ended his narrative here, he seems to have concluded by deliberately not concluding, by dangling something incomplete and unsatisfying before the reader in the final verse: «So they went out and fled from the
tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.»
Also, at the very start (1:2) a prophesied «messenger» is «sent before thy face» to prepare the way
of the Lord — just as at the very
end, the young man in the
tomb is the only human left to testify to the risen Jesus, who «went ahead» to Galilee.
After the grotesque scene
ended, what was left
of John was claimed by his disciples and laid in a
tomb.
Nicodemus is pursuing the path that begins in the darkness
of the womb, is continually reborn in the dark night
of the soul, and
ends, on this earth, in the darkness
of the
tomb.
He says those who make arguments for God's existence are like people who point a flashlight at the sun and run the risk
of ending up like the women who went to Jesus»
tomb — with a living God on their hands rather than a dead one.
