Cell surface receptors can be endocytosed by both clathrin - dependent and clathrin - independent mechanisms, but, as yet, there is no clear understanding of why alternative
endocytic routes exist or how receptors are committed to a particular route.
However, we have recently discovered that, depending on the concentration of ligand, the EGFR may also be internalised via an alternative clathrin - independent / lipid raft - dependent
endocytic route: non-clathrin endocytosis (NCE)(4).
