The fault lies partly in the uniform lighting; partly in Selldorf's choppy and somewhat clunky installation, which misuses the famed 15,000 sq ft of open space to rob the sculptural
work of adequate breathing room; and to a larger extent on too great an emphasis on Stella's
enduring vigour, which, given that the later
works were
farmed out, rings hollow and does grave disservice to the impregnable place of his early
work in a meaningful history of art.
