Teaching future generations to be environmentally aware is an ever - growing benefit of the curriculum, but if children can be taught in a safe and
energy efficient building then that provides a practical example too.

This happens because a net - zero
building may need to draw electricity from the grid to power its lights at night, for example,
then returns that
energy the next day, when its solar panels are most
efficient.
The researchers also
built five gaming computers with progressively more
efficient component configurations,
then followed industry protocols for benchmarking performance while measuring
energy use.
By implementing
energy efficiency measures, e.g. cavity walls, double - glazing,
energy efficient boilers and chillers, LED lighting, etc. combined with remote monitoring and control, schools can substantially reduce
energy bills and the savings can
then be directed to essential
building maintenance.
How about demonstrating and
then publicizing how to cost - effectively retrofit a 19th century
building with the latest in
energy efficient building shell, HVAC, and appliances?

leed certified is a joke, i
build leed certified commercial jobs, for example reclaimed wood takes more
energy to recover
then sustainable regrowth, wood has to be reclaimed
then transported to a wood shop,
then reworked using less
energy efficient methods than used by large sawmills,
then transported again using less economical methods.
At the least we need to be sure all
buildings are
efficient, air sealed and insulated,
then equipped with renewable
energy to minimize the burning of fossil fuels to make them comfortable.
However, if we use
energy efficient design strategies, incorporate including on - site power generation from renewable sources, and have access to off - site renewables if necessary,
then the
building sector can become the solution to the climate change crisis.
If you make a
building energy efficient then you have to worry about VOCs, formaldehyde, fire retardants and every other chemical that can
build up; an
efficient house has to be a healthy house.
And just as with good, intelligent,
energy efficient buildings, the first step is reducing demand, and
then the second is clean
energy and new technology.
This means that rather than changing everything in a
building, we focus on assets that need replacing or upgrading, and
then choose the most
energy -
efficient replacements that are also cost - comparable over a reasonably short period of time.
