As a freelance editor of mostly self - published books, I can never learn
enough about book design.
However, I'll concede here that success isn't always quick: most authors publish, are excited, aren't happy with their sales, and over the course of several years learn
enough about book design and marketing to improve.

Another distinction: Do - it - yourself publishing, where the author attempts (with varying degrees of success) to self - edit the
book, learn
enough about typography and
design to come up with something reasonably professional looking, do the same for the cover, create and execute a marketing plan, etc., etc..
