the entire gear selecting operation was carried out by simply moving the gear lever from one ratio to the next.

At least that's the theory; even so, it takes all the steel you can muster to
select fifth
gear and keep your right foot planted beyond 110 mph for the first few laps (OK, the
entire first day), the car weaving and dancing around alarmingly.
So while it's a different motion to
select gears, it's still the same basic concept that most automatic drivers have used for their
entire motoring careers.
