If Palo Verde is replaced
entirely by natural gas, carbon emissions in Arizona would increase by the equivalent of adding 2.8 million cars to the road.
Speaking at an energy conference in Tel Aviv, Energy Minister Steinitz said the country's manufacturing and transportation industries will be fueled
entirely by natural gas, electricity and alternative fuels within the next 12 years.
Not exact matches
The whole thing started in 2015, when Stanford professor Mark Jacobson and some colleagues published a paper arguing that,
by mid-century, the United States could be powered
entirely by clean energy sources — and
by clean, he meant the really clean stuff (wind, solar, hydropower), not the only - somewhat - cleaner - than - coal stuff like
natural gas, nuclear energy, and biofuels.
The administration will seek to phase out the two coal plants that will be remaining at the end of this year,
by converting them to
natural gas or shutting them down
entirely.
I think the analysis that best captures this effect is the one done
by Larry Cathles (see here and here), which concludes that even with 1 percent leakage, on the centennial time scale switching to
natural gas gives you 40 percent of the benefit of switching to
entirely carbon - free energy.
Solar PV (with associated energy storage costs included) could supply 23 % of global power generation in 2040 and 29 %
by 2050,
entirely phasing out coal and leaving
natural gas with just a 1 % market share.
In comparison, emissions from energy to power an electric Nissan Leaf would cost us $ 840 even if purely powered
by coal, and $ 290 if fueled
by electricity supplied
entirely from
natural gas.
