an ePub reading app, but they added support for PDF files awhile back and it does a serviceable job displaying PDFs.

You don't need to own a dedicated eReader to access these: a variety of free
apps and programmes will allow you to
read epub documents on your computer, tablet or smartphone.
The books can be exported as
ePub files that can be
read in applications such as iBooks, the Kindle

I myself would have been willing to pay $ 50 or even $ 75 more for a Fire HD as open as a generic Android 4.0 machine; maybe its

ePub, and besides Kindle (wich does not suppot these files), I've found an
App named Bookviser, and it is by far the best option for
read ePubs in Windows 8.1

EPUB ecosystem can offer that Amazon can't, is tight interoperability between unrelated ebook vendors, services, and
reading apps.
Icarus has an e-reading
app that is integrated into the home screen and allows you to
read PDF, FB2,
EPUB, RTF, MOBI, TXT, HTM files.
That is to say if you have non-DRM ebooks in
ePub format, you can use the Kobo
App to
read the books.
You have to use Aldiko a free android
reading app to open
ePub files on the cruz.
If I want to use the Kindle
app on my Android tablet to
read an
ePub book, I convert it to MOBI, stick it into the Kindle directory, and the Kindle
app recognizes the new book the next time it is loaded.
You can
read MOBI /
EPUB books, or use the note taking
app.
This means that you can not sideload in your own content because the Amazon
App Store does not have any 3rd party e-reading
apps to
read Kindle books or anything that will

Via Eolake Stobblehouse, an article by Adam Engst tipped me off to Aldiko Reader, a good Kindle Fire
app for
reading ePUB files.
There are workarounds, of course, like removing the DRM from Kindle books and using an
ePub app that supports TTS, or using accessibility voice over features like on the iPad to
read everything aloud, but those options are cumbersome to use and aren't very practical for average users.
The
app connects to a variety of online sources for free and paid books, and can
read other books in non-DRM-protected
ePub, eReader, PDF, Comic Book Archive, and DjVu formats.
IBooks supports
ePub and PDF formats, so you can also use the
app to
read PDF files on your iPhone - although you'll have to transfer them to iBooks from the mail
app or iTunes, and unfortunately you can't open links to PDFs from Safari with this
app.
If you have a book in
ePub format, you can still
read it, but you'll either need to convert it using a program like Calibre or install a separate
reading app like Aldiko on your Fire.
All of these devices
read EPUB and PDF right out of the box and other formats such as MOBI, TXT, RTF and tons of audio formats via 3rd party
apps.
There are hundreds, if not thousands of
reading apps that have the ability to
read DRM protected PDF files or
EPUB Files.
However, if I ever buy an Amazon ebook, I first strip it of its DRM and then
read it in my favorite eBook reader
app that only
reads ePub (Marvin for iOS).
