There are serious miscalculations throughout The Lone Ranger, starting with the casting: Hammer plays the masked hero with the dim enthusiasm (or enthusiastic dimness) of Brendan Fraser at his most stilted; Depp's Tonto is an ethnically dubious repurposing of his popular Jack Sparrow character, more stoic but
equally eccentric; and Helena Bonham Carter,
as a brothel madam with a lethal
fake leg, does little but add to the cartoon grotesquerie.
The film's surprising sense of humor occurs largely during the Hollywood sequences,
as Mendez recruits his old buddy and movie makeup master John Chambers (a hilarious and wonderful John Goodman),
as well
as veteran producer Lester Siegel (an
equally enjoyable Alan Arkin), to assist in the creation of the
fake production company and film.
Second: Gleick knowingly passed along a
fake document, in which case he (and any who applaud that
as being «heroic») should be suspected of potentially having passed along
fake data or analysis in their scientific work since they might
equally have rationalized that the «ends justified the means».
If you were to
fake an old edition of A Tale of Two Cities (just for example), the project would have turned out
equally as well & I would bet you could actually sell it
as decor.
