Dissolved GHG flux (Fd) was calculated as: where Csur is the gas concentration in surface water, Ceq is the gas concentration when in
equilibrium with the atmosphere at ambient temperature (global atmospheric concentrations were used), and k is the gas exchange velocity calculated as: where Sc is the Schmidt number calculated from empirical third - order polynomial fit to water temperature and corrected at 20 °C.
The reason for this conclusion is that, unlike the open ocean, pCO2 in coastal ecosystems is not necessarily in
equilibrium with the atmosphere at even annual timescales and many coastal ecosystems emit CO2 into the atmosphere (Laruelle et al. 2010; Cai 2011).
Before the large - scale development of industry, mature forests were in
equilibrium with the atmosphere.
Carbon dating is a variety of radioactive dating which is applicable only to matter which was once living and presumed to be in
equilibrium with the atmosphere, taking in carbon dioxide from the air for photosynthesis.
But more importantly Caldeira and Wickett's modeling experiments only examined geochemical processes and erroneously assumed 1) ocean surface CO2 is in
equilibrium with the atmosphere; and 2) the biosphere was a neutral participant.
If surface pH was in
equilibrium with the atmosphere, then CO2 concentrations would have hovered around 2000 ppm, but there is no consensus that CO2 reached those levels.
