Some autopsy data shows that infants of smokers have signs of
established hypoxic - ischemic cellular
injury in the
brain and the heart which probably occurred in antenatal life, may have been caused
by suboptimal placental function and may have been sub-clinical, but if the baby continues to be in a vulnerable environment exposed to post-natal passive smoking, this could affect autonomic nervous system function and lead to poor temperature control, and poor heart rate and respiration control.
In their current work, the researchers calculated the vulnerability of each species to
brain injury by establishing a mathematical relationship between properties of the skull,
brain, and surrounding flesh, and the propagation of incoming shockwaves.
In an effort to achieve these goals, we have
established interdisciplinary partnerships devoted to the study of basic biological processes and signaling pathways targeted
by neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, tauopathies, Down syndrome, neurometabolic disease (including obesity & diabetes), motor neuron disease and traumatic
brain injury.
