The arguments that many activists put forward are effectively a cascade of «one follows the other» assumptions that diminish in their necessity and certainty as they move away from what has been
established by climate science, into the increasingly contingent domain of Nth - order effects of Nth - order effects.

Yesterday, 375 members of the National Academy of Sciences, including 30 Nobel Prize winners, posted an open letter reviewing the basics of
established climate science, decrying claims of hoax and hype spouted
by Republicans during the presidential campaign and warning against the United States pulling out of the Paris Agreement on

I conjecture that three changes in the way in which the
climate problem is presented
by the experts to the general public would make the conversation go better: acknowledge that
climate constraints are unwelcome (thereby
establishing empathy with general audiences, as a doctor does when conveying bad news), present the
science as unfinished (thereby taking away the surprise factor that accompanies every new wrinkle — cf. the cosmic ray stories of a couple of weeks ago), and admit that no solution is wonderful (something hard for much of our community, which loves some strategy and hates at least one of the others).
But contrarians either wish to have stations eliminated (even though we can get useful information from them
by correcting the data using well
established statistical methods and closing stations would reduce the accuracy of our temperature estimates) or what is more likely, simply wish to change the focus from the well -
established rise in temperatures (
by means of many independent lines of investigation including the shrinking of the Arctic Ice Cap) to the fact that some stations are not ideal in order to discredit the
science which has
established that
climate change is taking place and that it threatens countless lives.
Two years after James E. Hansen, the leading
climate scientist at NASA, and other agency employees described a pattern of distortion and suppression of
climate science by political appointees, the agency's inspector general has concluded that such activities occurred and were «inconsistent» with the law that

There is clearly now so much junk in the body of

Add to this the fact that the older, more experienced

It argues that the IPCC's «heroic days» of «Herculean work» are probably over, more frequent assessments focused on policy challenges are required, and the wider review of
science made possible
by the blogosphere can help: New Scientist says because the case for anthropogenic
climate change is firmly
established («the Nobel prize is won») the IPCC really needs to revision itself.
The good news is (at least from the perspective of
science) that the role of carbon dioxide in
climate change is very well
established — at the theoretical level in terms of quantum physics, at the experimental level in terms of the study of the absorbtion and re-emission of radiation
by carbon dioxide, at the numerical level (when equations get a little too complicated — but a good approximation can result from intensive computation
by means of our fairly advanced computers), in terms of historical trends going back more than 500,000 years — and countless studies.
