In healthy individuals HCMV
establishes lifelong latency, but in immunocompromised patients, viral reactivation can lead to severe
clinical symptoms, such as disseminated viral
infection, blindness and potentially cancer.
The safety and efficacy of these methods have been well
established through long - term
clinical outcomes studies in the field, with the nasal lining protecting the brain from
infection just as the blood brain barrier has done.
Because chronic
infection has not been directly related to
clinical disease and because a therapeutic regimen effective in clearing the organism from an infected animal has not been
established, treating clinically healthy, seropositive animals is of questionable benefit and not generally recommended at this time.
