For the subset of teachers who can be linked to students, we are able to
estimate value -
added measures of classroom performance for each teacher in each year.
This has profound implications: Chetty and colleagues
estimate that replacing a teacher whose
value added is in the bottom 5 percent of the distribution with an average teacher would increase the present discounted
value of students» lifetime income by more than $ 250,000 for a typical class (of 28 students).
This allows for the use of statistical models to
estimate the total contribution — that attributable to both observable and unobserved teacher attributes — of teachers toward student test - score gains (often referred to as «
value added»).
Teachers who receive ratings at or close to the median in the school have
estimated value -
added measures that are quite widely dispersed.
If we use standard
value -
added methods to
estimate the effects of attending a charter school for these students, the results do not match well with those of our lottery - based analysis.
As part of Brookings» ongoing series, The Brown Center Chalkboard, Professor Tom Kane's paper — «Do
Value -
Added Estimates Identify Causal Effects of Teachers and Schools?»
If we limit the analysis to the 5th - grade applicants for whom we can compute
value -
added estimates, the number of student - year observations included immediately falls by about 85 percent.
The average gap in school quality between these groups would be eliminated in the first step of the two - step
value -
added procedure, and thus would not carry over to the
estimated growth measures.
This allows them to measure family characteristics (such as parental income) not typically controlled for when teacher
value -
added is
estimated.
Our
estimates imply that replacing a teacher whose
value added is in the bottom 5 percent with an average teacher would increase students» cumulative lifetime income by a total of $ 1.4 million per classroom taught.
Following an existing literature on teacher and school
value -
added, this recent charter school research controls for student demographics and baseline academic achievement in order to
estimate the effectiveness of individual schools.
In a project with the Pittsburgh Public Schools, we developed
value -
added statistical models that
estimate teachers» and schools» contributions to the achievement of their students.
CCSA partners with EA to implement Academic Growth over Time
value -
added estimates for charter schools across California.
The Times analysis used a «
value added» statistical analysis of math and English scores from the school district — the nation's second largest — to
estimate the effectiveness of third - through fifth - grade teachers.
Unlike some other methods of
estimating teacher effectiveness, such as
value -
added modeling, MGP calculations do not try to adjust for differences in student characteristics.
