Commemorating its anniversary, Rabbi David Rosen, of the America Jewish Committee, recently said that Nostra Aetate «took us from a situation where the Jewish people were seen as cursed and rejected by God, and even in league with the devil, to a situation now where popes say it is impossible to be a true Christian and be an anti-Semite, and that the
covenant between God and the Jewish people is an
eternal covenant, never broken.»
To be sure, in his
eternal wisdom, God elected those whom he chose for
eternal life and banned the remainder to perdition, but the way he chose to make known his election was through his Word and Spirit, which created a relationship of
covenant between himself and each of his elect; thus, the relation
between God and the individual was grounded on
covenant.
