Greece's outspoken finance minister resigned on Monday, removing a major obstacle to any last - minute
deal to keep Athens in the
euro zone after Greeks voted resoundingly to reject the austerity terms of a
bailout.
The debt
deal, which came on Friday after about 19 similar summits since the start of the debt crisis (with few results), called for countries that use the
euro to allows two European
bailout funds to aid European banks directly, rather than make loans to governments to bail out the banks.
As the news service notes, Group of Eight leaders on May 19 urged Greece to stay within the
euro area as polls in the country showed a close race between parties supporting and opposing the European Union's
bailout deal.
