The idea is to arm
armored combat vehicles and tactical wheeled vehicles with additional protective technology to secure platforms and soldiers from enemy fire; vehicles slated for use of APS
systems are infantry fighting vehicles such as Bradleys along with Stykers, Abrams tanks and
even tactical vehicles such as transport trucks and the emerging Humvee replacement, the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle.
There is an upgrade
system that allows you to beef up your
armor, reload speeds and such, but grinding is worse than Dead Rising and not
even half as fun.
Sure, the game's robust Diablo-esque loot
system (one of Nioh's high points in my opinion) can help the player deck William out in gear that can help his survivability, but
even with the best
armor and weapons you won't get very far if you hope to just button - mash your way to victory.
A new crafting
system will let you hammer together the weapon of your dreams, and you'll
even be able to customize your power
armor.
It feels odd that
armor customisation is still locked behind this progression
system, requiring you to spend hours in order to change your characters helmet to something a bit more flashy, or
even to change the background from your characters unit emblem (mines a cat with a circle behind it).
Interestingly, they were also the first fully action orientated mecha games on the
system (
even the industry stalwart From Software were unable to release a version of
Armored Core with full player control, if anything they went down the Carnage Heart route with their first release of
Armored Core Formula Front).
Robots
even have the same nifty
system of equipping them with weapons /
armor to increase their stats.
These work around a complex and rewarding set of equipment - based
systems, which are admittedly daunting at first: you can fuse two pieces of like gear together to create a better one (a holdover from Graces); stack your equipment's skills to gain a cumulative benefit; and
even assign adorable creatures called normin to your weapons and
armor to learn new skills.
