I'm always looking for ways to cut
even more calories, so I subbed out the honey (or maple
syrup) for applesauce, and added 1/2 cup
golden monkfruit to make them
even lower in sugar.
i'm eating this right now and it's really good
even though i forgot to add the wine, subbed
golden syrup for the maple
syrup, and then also forgot to marinate it for 10 minutes.
I must have a sweet tooth though, because it was still quite tart,
even with the extra
golden syrup.

Golden syrup has lovely caramel notes but if you can't find it at your local supermarket, try substituting equal parts corn
syrup and honey, or
even try maple
syrup.
They're completely refined sugar free, and only contain a small amount of coconut sugar which can be substituted for rice
syrup if you want an
even lower fructose option (though they won't look quite as
golden).
Instead of light corn
syrup you could use
golden syrup or
even agave.
