comic book — which is loosely based on Jay and Silent Bob — to Miramax, and the studio greenlit a big - budget production.Before it
even begins, though, the pending «'' Bluntman & Chronic»» film provides more than enough fodder for a new wave
of hate - mongers who prowl the Internet, namely pimple - faced geeks who slam anything they can type about on a series
of movie gossip websites.
Even in the angst - friendly world
of the
comic book, the X-Men have always stood
out.
I never read the
comic and quit watching the show after that nonsensical arm hacksawing three episodes in, so maybe I've missed
out on something, but for all
of the hype surrounding this game, I only felt that the story was «good» — perhaps
even «very good,» in spite
of its predictability, due to its execution.
Other enjoyable performances back Sandler's up: Emmanuelle Chriqui is a charming leading lady; Lainie Kazan's crack
comic timing put me in mind
of her uproarious portrayal
of the ultimate Jewish mom in 1982's My Favorite Year (and she doesn't look like she's aged a day since); as two
of the Zohan's old foes, John Turturro is amusing (
even if he's in danger
of becoming this decade's answer to Vito Scotti if he takes on too many more ethnic roles), while Sandler's longtime buddy and perpetual hanger - on Rob Schneider for once DOES N'T make you want to tear
out either his hair or your own.
The good news is that some parts
of this shopping list are checked off with style and grace: Tony and Pepper are still, at heart, the leads in a screwball comedy — and Downey and Paltrow are top form here; the new villain has the
comics» Crimson Dynamo's name — Ivan Vanko [Mickey Rourke]-- but instead
of wearing the hopelessly
out of date crimson armor, wields a pair
of plasma whips that can slice and dice
even Stark's fancy suit; and finally, there's Justin Hammer [Sam Rockwell — who was a finalist in casting Stark], a hi - tech weapons manufacturer who got Stark's old Department
of Defence contracts
even though he's not nearly as talented.
And yet Ned turns
out to be a strangely moving figure, a
comic foil worthy
of affection, perhaps
even respect.
Darwyn Cooke's Eisner Award - winning mini-series, «DC: The New Frontier», gets the direct - to - DVD animated movie treatment, which will likely please fans
of DC
comics in general,
even though its revisionist nature may irk some «Justice League» fans, while those who love the
comic might feel like too much was left
out to call this a truly successful adaptation (400 + densely presented
comic book pages squeezed into a mere 75 minutes).

So what begins as a lark — with the vast assortment
of comic book characters trotting
out their costumes; middle - aged Bruce Banner humorously being so
out of practice that he can no longer transform himself into the Hulk; Tony Stark bantering once again with Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts; Holland's Peter Parker looking so childish
even he seems to wonder what he's doing in this company; Dave Bautista stealing every scene he's in; Scarlett Johansson and Don Cheadle being given absolutely nothing fresh or original to do; Evans trying to leave his Captain America persona behind him — transforms into something genuinely threatening and grim, something, in fact, that has to be taken seriously: the prospect that evil can win.
Even the darker second film had plenty
of humor throughout, but Skull's attempts are in the realm
of mild
comic relief rather than contriving scenes
of out - and -
out gags.
Even by the standards
of the current run
of mediocre
comic - book movies, this one stands
out for its egregious shoddiness.
Even the slapstick in this film has an ugly streak to it, such as when our heroes throw apples at joggers and bikers for fun, or when a gay couple played by Patrick Warburton and Michael Dorn attend
Comic - Con to beat the crap
out of nerds, simply for being nerds.
The 11 - foot CGI Hulk may look a little cartoonish, the addition
of rabid Hulk dogs is downright lame, and the use
of comic book panel editing is an acquired taste, but it still looks and feels like a superhero movie,
even if it didn't turn
out exactly the way we wanted it to.
That's why many reacted strongly to simplifying «Get
Out» as a comedy,
even though Peele (half
of the comedy duo
of Key and Peele) is a
comic veteran.
He took a beloved Marvel institution — the X-Men — and made a crappy movie
out of it, then admitted he didn't
even read the
comics and that he didn't use his brain, but his «eye and instincts.»
Even if there are a lot
of games that were adapted from anime and
comics, Dragon Ball Fighterz was still able to stand
out from the rest because
of how they applied the story to the game.
The notion
of an event like this, combined with the general insanity
of San Diego
Comic - Con, makes me feel like breaking
out in hives, and I'm not
even going to San Diego
Comic - Con.
And
even though lately many
of the biggest returns have gone to original, outside - the - box tales like Inside
Out, Wreck - It Ralph and Zootopia, most animation studios in and outside
of North America and the production companies bankrolling them still opt for tried and true
comic adventures with wisecracking animals and conventional hero's journeys.
Lament the saturation
of CGI - laden franchises, reboots and superhero films all you like, but some fantastic, revelatory works
of cinema came
out this last year —
even some
of those
comic book movies you're so worried about.
With so much
of its would - be surprise elements given away in its trailer, and
even in the film's poster, «The Hangover 2» has a tough time mustering up the gross -
out comic suspense the filmmakers are after.
Free stuff is great, and free books and
comics are
of course
even better, but despite this it's worth pointing
out that both the titles I mention above are much cheaper than buying a single issue printed
comic, let alone a graphic novel (a single issue
of a monthly
comic from Image may cost up to # 3.95 GBP; but The Kill Screen was initially on sale for half that at # 1.99 for # 1 and Mills released Psychokiller for # 2.49).
Most
comics shops are small businesses, and they are often tucked away in
out -
of - the - way places, so people may not
even know if they have one nearby.
The selection is so limited currently, that new or previously - estranged readers are
out of luck
even if they do want to delve into decades» worth
of comic history.

DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Jim Lee has redesigned the yellow ninja in order to fit into the
comic universe, and it is good to see that the very first guy I learned how to play as in Mortal Kombat is still beating the snot
out of everyone after all these years (not
