horror movie — and I wouldn't even say it's just a
horror movie because it's a
horror, comedy, rom - com drama — into a Back to the Future type of genre
film where the sequel joins us right from where we left off, it explains a lot of things
in the first one that didn't get explained, and it elevates
everything.
The first
film felt like a fun little movie to pay homage to some classic
horror movies, and seeing the success, it felt like Wirkola put
in everything he had to make sure that this movie stood on its own and it sure a fuck does.
It's a bleak
film about the inherently destructive nature of beauty and youth —
everything alive is dying — but there are real jokes dropped
in the midst of the
horror and despair.
Frenetic, darkly hilarious and surprisingly simple, this is
in my opinion another win for A24 entertainment as they continue to produce quality
films in every genre from
horror to comedy and
everything in between.
My take: Personally, I don't gravitate toward school - shooting movies, but
everything I've heard about this one says that it's far from your typical take on the genre, instead focusing on the parents
in a way that almost turns the
film into psychological
horror.
It's also nice to know that the
film isn't just a rehashing of Raimi's first movie, but rather a whole new story with new characters
in an otherwise familiar setting, and if the early buzz from the
film's world premiere at last month's SXSW festival is any indication, Fede Alvarez's remake / reboot / sequel (whatever you want to call it) has
everything horror fans could possibly want — namely, the gooey red stuff, and plenty of it.
