The results jibe with a different theory — getting stuck with needles can endanger one's health via infections, so the
study supports the
evolutionary «handicap» theory that only those with high
biological quality can afford such risky behavior.
The
study, published in the scientific journal
Biological Reviews, concludes that the theory of «fecundity selection» — one of Charles Darwin's three main
evolutionary principles, also known as «fertility selection» — should be redefined so that it no longer rests on the idea that more fertile females are more successful in
evolutionary terms.
Professor Paul Upchurch (UCL Earth Sciences), co-author of the
Biological Reviews
study, added: «Several previous methodological
studies have shown that it is important to include as many species in an
evolutionary tree as possible: this generally improves the accuracy of the tree.
The new work addresses what David Puts, a
biological anthropologist at Pennsylvania State University, University Park, calls «one of the most contentious questions in the

Biological Anthropology and Henry Markovits, from the University of Quebec at Montreal, the
study's co-authors.
The research in his laboratory involves the
study of the nature and extent of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) genetic variation, the
biological and
evolutionary processes that have produced the observed patterns, and the human genes and their relevant genetic variants that influence susceptibility or resistance to HIV infection.
