Marine mollusks can embed photonic structures into their curved shells without compromising shell strength; deep sea sponges
evolved fiber optic cables to direct light to symbiotically living organisms; and brittlestars cover their skeletons with lenses to focus light into the body to «see» at night.
The design and technical details have now
evolved further, with this latest incarnation consisting of 5220 acrylic stems, each topped with a frosted globe that shines with light emitted from a series of projectors, all connected through a snaking network of
fiber optic cables.
